Scents to Help Us Through the Winter

Our sense of smell has the power to stimulate our mind and body and specific scents can have a healing effects on us.  We all have specific scents (good and bad) that evoke memories or feelings, don’t be afraid to use them to when you need a little pick-me-up. To benefit from the sense of smell, simply use them as a diffuser oil, in an aroma lamp or by simply smelling the real thing. Here are my top three scents for this time of year.

1. Cinnamon

Who doesn’t love the warmth and comfort that cinnamon evokes? Cinnamon is one of those scents that just about everyone loves.  Cinnamon is known for its antidepressant properties in addition to it being highly anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal.

2. Citrus Scents: Orange, Lemon, Grapefruit

There is nothing more refreshing than the smell of an orange being peeled. Citrus scents are known to uplift  spirits, boost immune systems and are great when winter coughs take over the house.  Use this oil throughout the house and watch a calming tone ensue – as if all things are right with the world.

3. Pine

I know the holidays are over, but the scent of pine is perfect to use throughout the winter season.  Pine is known to improve energy and help with stress relief and mental clarity. We could all use a little of that now and then.

Important Note: Be aware that proper dilution of essential oil is imperative as applying topically can easily burn the skin.
